“Matthieu Idmtal is a poet at the keyboard. With highly mastered pianissimi he forced his audience to hold their breath, while no single note sounded superficial. When he continued his journey with Chopin he impressed by his undoubtable talent for lyricism, and a spontaneity reminiscent of the masters at the beginning of the twentieth century. A romantic through and through. “
As a prize winner of more than 15 international competitions, Matthieu Idmtal has performed at Belgian stages such as Bozar, Flagey, Handelsbeurs, De Bijloke, De Singel, Philharmonie de Liège, and participated in festivals such as the Klara Festival, Festival Musiq’3, Les Sommets du Classique (Switzerland), Musicales and Côte Chalonnaise (France), Les Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad (Switzerland), Brussels Piano Festival, Gentse Vleugels, Festival Musical d’Arcangues (France), Podium Jonge Musici, and Brussels Chopin Days.
Matthieu Idmtal has established himself as a leading interpreter of the music of Scriabin. He has performed for the European Scriabin Society, and was praised for his emotional intensity and deeply poetic and personal interpretations.
His first solo recording of two major piano cycles of Alexander Scriabin received high critical acclaim such as: ‘In a sublime way, he joins the beauty of sound with expression. His playing contains a variated and colorful touch, supple phrasing, a natural rubato, precisely elaborated dynamics, and a contagious imagination. Idmtal is a poet at the piano.’ —Magazine Stretto
The CD received a five star review by the National Belgian radio, Radio Klara.
Last season, Idmtal gave solo recitals and concerts with orchestra in Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, Latvia and Spain.
His repertoire ranges from the baroque through contemporary, but he has always had a particular attention to (Post-) Romantic music, with a focus on Chopin and Scriabin.
His affinity with the former lead to the creation of Brussels Chopin Days: an international concert series dedicated to F. Chopin, of which Matthieu Idmtal has been the artistic director since 2013.
