VICE PRESIDENT OF ARTISTIC PLANNING
Reflecting the vision of the Music Director as the artistic leader of the organization, the Vice President of Artistic Planning is responsible and accountable for the development and execution of the overall artistic program, and ensures that programming is consistent with the mission, goals, and values of the Minnesota Orchestra.We believe every employee is essential to the success of the organization and critical to accomplishing our mission. Working with the President and CEO, the Artistic Planning Group, the Artistic Advisory Committee, guest conductors, resident artists, and staff, the VP prepares multi-year plans for all Minnesota Orchestra concerts. Our programs are designed to attract, inspire, and excite concert audiences. Working within approved budget guidelines, the VP determines artists and repertoire for classical concerts, educational concerts, special concerts, tours, broadcasts, recordings, and all other musical events.
Key Leadership and Strategy Accountabilities
Takes a leadership role with the Artistic Planning Group; ensures effective internal communication and transparency about all artistic matters
Meets regularly with the Music Director and the Artistic Advisory Committee to receive recommendations and to discuss repertoire, guest conductors, soloists, and other programming issues
Oversees the engagement of all artists, including conductors, composers, solo artists, and ensembles
Develops festivals and thematic programming as appropriate
Cultivates and stewards relationships with creative and performing artists and their managers; serves as an artistic collaborator and resource for soloists and guest artists as well as members of the Orchestra
Keeps current and informed about talented conductors, composers, vocalists, and instrumentalists, especially at the outset of their professional careers
Oversees the Minnesota Orchestra’s commissioning program
Serves as a resource to other departments, including Development, Marketing, Communications, Operations, and Education and Community Engagement by providing expert knowledge and research
Participates in presentations to external audiences; serves as a spokesperson on programming and artistic matters
Works with Marketing and Communications in finding connections between programming and audiences; reviewing and editing artistic programming-related printed materials; and engaging with the Digital team to advise on program-related content
Takes a leadership role in identifying, recruiting, and introducing the next Music Director of the Minnesota Orchestra to multiple stakeholders
With the Vice Presidents of Advancement, Marketing and Guest Services, Finance and Administration, and Orchestra Administration and the Directors of Human Resources and Communications, serves as a member of the President and CEO’s senior leadership team
Demonstrates leadership through a commitment to Orchestra values, setting clear goals and priorities, holding themselves and direct reports accountable to meet priorities, coaching and counseling direct reports regarding individual performance and other career development areas, and creating an environment that inspires a high level of commitment and performance
Key Qualifications and Abilities
Formal education in music and the performing arts, or equivalent training and hands-on experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position
Progressively responsible experience in a similar music or performing arts management role developing an artistic program and managing a team
Thorough knowledge of the full range of orchestra repertoire
Highly developed understanding of audience interests; passion for connecting audiences with orchestras and symphonic music
Demonstrated interest in innovation, commissioning, and presenting new work
Demonstrated success developing and managing relationships with conductors, solo artists, composers, and their agents, managers, and publishers; established relationships with leading international artists; and the demonstrated ability to recognize and cultivate young talent
Experience negotiating performance fees and contracts
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with excellent attention to detail
Ability to listen and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, external suppliers, vendors, and other entities
Demonstrated aptitude for preparing and analyzing financial information such as annual planning, monthly budgeting, and managing expenditures
Willingness to be a team player with a collaborative approach to artistic planning
